Watch Winder TPD Database: Turns Per Day & Winding Direction

Watch Winder TPD Database: Turns Per Day & Winding Direction

Automatic watches stay wound on a watch winder only when the winder turns the right number of times per day, in the right direction. This free database lists the recommended turns per day (TPD) and winding direction for over 30,109 watch models and calibres across 837 brands — one of the largest TPD references anywhere.

Choose your watch brand below to see the settings for your model. If a model isn't listed, its movement/calibre usually is — and 650 TPD bi-directional is a safe default for most modern automatics.

What is TPD (turns per day)?

TPD is the number of rotations a watch winder completes in 24 hours. Too few turns and the watch runs down; the mainspring of a modern automatic cannot be overwound, but the correct TPD keeps wear to a minimum. Most automatics need 650–800 TPD.

Which winding direction should I choose?

Some movements wind in one direction only — clockwise (CW) or counter-clockwise (CCW) — while most modern movements wind in both. If the table lists “both directions”, a bi-directional or alternating winder program is ideal.

My watch brand isn't listed — what now?

Start with 650 TPD, bi-directional. Leave the watch on the winder for 48 hours; if it loses time or stops overnight, step the TPD up (750, then 900). Our watch winders have fully adjustable TPD and direction programs, so every setting in this database can be dialled in.
